Tiles

If you're playing with a true Chinese Mahjong set (without English letters on the tiles), you may find the following tile guide to be of some assistance:

1	4	7

East	South	West	North
White	Red	Green

Other notes:

The flower and season tiles are numbered 1-4. The number corresponds to the players' seat directions: 1=E, 2=S, 3=W, 4=N.
The "one" of bamboo is depicted as a bird.

Common Chinese Words

The following Chinese words are typically used when playing Mahjong:

Pong (long "o") Three-of-a-kind. Called out when taking a discarded tile to complete a pung.

Chi ("chur") Run (sequence) of three. Called out when taking a discarded tile to complete a chr.

Gang (like "gong") Four-of-a-kind. Called out when completing a gang.

Jiagang ("jaw-gong") Called out when taking a fourth tile to convert a pong into a gang.

Hule ("hoo-luh") "Finished." Called out when going out with a completed Mahjong hand.

Seat Markers

You may wish to use these markers to denote each seat position in your game.

1. EAST
2. SOUTH
3. WEST
4. NORTH
